South Island | Monkey Island

Life is about the people you meet and memories you create with them.

Don’t get confused by the name – there were no monkeys. But there is a small, cute island. Monkey Island beach is another freedom campsite. It means that you are allowed to camp for free. Some of the campsites are meant for self-contained vehicles (campervans), others allow any vehicle type. This makes traveling super easy and super cheap, not spending any money for accommodation.

The place is listed as one of my favourite campsites so far. Gentle winds and sea vibes produce bunch of positive energy, bouncing it all around and the sunsets leave you speechless. Lukas and I decided to finish our traveling with the most delicious dinner ever – pancakes! After meeting Sonia, Robert , Linchen and Ran, we extended our stay at the beach, had two days of relaxing, eating pancakes, drinking wine and enjoying our time off. Some people are simply amazing.

I’d like to finish this blog post with the story of the family I met at the beach.  They rented out their house, bought an old bus, renovated it, and went on the road with the kids and their dog.  When we asked them about the reason, they said “A while ago, friend asked me what I would do if I were diagnosed for cancer, and had only two months left. My answer was – travel with my family. Then he asked me, if I need to be diagnosed for cancer, to do that. So we went traveling.”

So, what would you do? And, do you need that kind of reason to do it?
